Umar is a seasoned chartered accountant with a rich history spanning over two decades, during which he has worked with a diverse range of businesses, from fledgling start-ups to multinational trading companies. His journey began at Leeds University, after which he honed his skills at BDO Binder Hamlyn, earning his stripes as a chartered accountant. His thirst for knowledge and experience led him to Coopers & Lybrand (now PwC), where he spent two years as an IT Auditor, working with global giants such as Pilkington Glass plc.

To further broaden his commercial acumen, Umar spent two years as an internal auditor for Akzo Nobel. During this time, he also established a part-time accountancy practice, which eventually merged with Jack Ross Chartered Accountants in 1999. By 2002, Umar had risen to the position of Audit Partner, taking on responsibilities for the firm’s corporate clients, dealing with audit, tax mitigation, financial due diligence, and business forecasts, as well as advising on corporation tax planning.

In 2004, Umar stepped into the role of Managing Partner, following in the illustrious footsteps of Jack Ross, Ged Lanigan & Peter Black. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the firm’s vision, both internally and externally. He has been a guiding light, coaching and mentoring colleagues to reach their full potential and deliver the highest levels of service to the clients of Jack Ross.

Umar’s forward-thinking approach has been pivotal in planning for the firm’s future success. He understands that the future is digital, and has been leading Jack Ross forward in adopting new technology and systems. This includes spearheading the firm’s transition to Making Tax Digital (MTD), a UK government initiative that requires VAT-registered businesses to keep digital records and submit VAT returns using compatible software. Umar’s expertise in this area ensures that Jack Ross stays at the forefront of digital tax management, providing clients with the most efficient and effective solutions.

In 2013, Umar established the Jack Ross Leadership Academy, nurturing the next generation of leaders within the firm. His commitment to continual growth and development is a testament to his dedication to the firm’s longevity, which has been in existence since 1948.

Away from the office, Umar finds balance through his love for photography and spending time with his young family. This blend of professional expertise and personal fulfilment makes Umar a well-rounded leader, perfectly equipped to guide Jack Ross Chartered Accountants into the future. His role within the firm is a testament to his leadership, coaching, and forward planning skills, all of which are essential in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of accountancy and tax planning.
