MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) rolls out in three phases based on qualifying income (gross self-employment + UK property income). Each phase adds quarterly digital updates via HMRC-compatible software, plus an annual Final Declaration replacing the current Self Assessment return.
Select which tax years to include, then download a .ics file you can import into Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or any calendar application.
Soft-landing period: 2026/27 tax year
HMRC will not charge penalty points for late quarterly updates during the first year of MTD ITSA (2026/27). This gives taxpayers and agents time to adjust to the new reporting requirements. Source: GOV.UK

Late Submission Penalties
From 2027/28 onwards, HMRC will apply a points-based penalty system for late quarterly updates:
Each late quarterly update adds 1 penalty point
At 4 points, you receive a £200 penalty
Points reset after 24 months of on-time submissions
During the 2026/27 soft-landing period, no penalty points are issued for the first four quarterly updates. For full details, see our penalties guide.
