To sign in to HMRC for a Making Tax Digital VAT return, use your Government Gateway user ID and password at gov.uk/sign-in-vat-account. Accountants filing on a client’s behalf sign in via an Agent Services Account at gov.uk/guidance/get-an-hmrc-agent-services-account. If accounting software (Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, FreeAgent or an Easy MTD bridging tool) prompts you to sign in, the authorisation happens once via gov.uk – then the software talks to the API for 18 months.
The three MTD VAT login routes
HMRC has three sign-in routes, and which one you use depends on whether you’re filing for yourself, filing as an agent, or authorising software to file for you. Pick the wrong route and you’ll see a “no obligations” or “access denied” error.
1. Government Gateway sign-in: file for your own business
Use this route as a business owner submitting your own return. Sign in at gov.uk/sign-in-vat-account with the Government Gateway user ID (a 12-digit number) and password set up when you first registered. Once signed in:
- View your VAT account, with obligations and payment history.
- Submit a return directly from gov.uk for the standard scheme.
- Set up or change a Direct Debit for payments.
- Authorise software to file on your behalf.
If you’ve forgotten your user ID, recover it at gov.uk/log-in-register-hmrc-online-services. Reset a forgotten password the same way; a reset link goes to your registered email.
2. Agent Services Account: file for clients
Use this route as an accountant or bookkeeper submitting returns for clients. Sign in to your Agent Services Account (ASA) at gov.uk/guidance/get-an-hmrc-agent-services-account. The ASA is separate from the older online services for agents – if you only have the legacy account, you’ll need to set up an ASA before you can submit any Making Tax Digital VAT return.
Steps to set one up:
- Sign in with your existing agent Government Gateway credentials.
- Click “Create an Agent Services Account”. HMRC creates a new agent reference number (ARN) for digital tax use.
- Link existing client authorisations from the legacy account to the ASA.
- Authorise new clients via the digital handshake – HMRC emails the client a link, the client signs in and accepts the authorisation.
Once a client is linked to your ASA, you can submit their MTD returns through software (Xero, Sage, QuickBooks or any other recognised tool) without each client needing to sign in.
3. Software-side authorisation: let your software file for you
Use this route after recording transactions in software (Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, an Easy MTD bridging tool, or any other HMRC-recognised package). Most businesses sign in via the software, not via gov.uk. The flow:
- In your software, find the “Connect to HMRC” or “Set up MTD” option (usually under Taxes or Settings).
- The software redirects to gov.uk. Sign in with your Government Gateway user ID and password.
- HMRC asks you to confirm the software’s permissions – read VAT obligations, submit returns, view liabilities.
- Confirm. HMRC sends you back to the software with an OAuth token that lasts 18 months.
- From then on, the software talks to the API directly. You don’t sign in to gov.uk again unless the token expires or you switch software.
If your software shows a “no obligations” or “VAT account not found” error, the cause is almost always that you haven’t signed up for Making Tax Digital at HMRC’s end – the gov.uk sign-up step is separate from the software authorisation. Sign up at gov.uk/sign-up-mtd-vat first, then re-test.
Common MTD VAT login problems and fixes
Three issues come up repeatedly:
- Government Gateway lockout after wrong passwords. The account locks for 30 minutes after five wrong attempts. Wait, then use the password reset link rather than guessing again.
- “You don’t have a VAT account” error. The Government Gateway user ID doesn’t have services attached. Add VAT under “Manage account > Business tax accounts > Add a tax” with your registration number.
- The gov.uk URL has changed. The old gov.uk/log-in-vat now redirects to gov.uk/sign-in-vat-account. If the legacy link is bookmarked, update it.
VAT MTD agent login: how it differs
Agent login uses a separate Government Gateway credential set from any individual login. An accountant who is also a VAT-registered sole trader will have two Government Gateway accounts – one personal, one agent. They’re not interchangeable.
The agent path:
- Sign in to your Agent Services Account using your agent credentials.
- Use practice software (most firms use Xero HQ, IRIS, TaxCalc or Sage Accountants Cloud) to file across multiple clients in one session.
- The submission goes under the ASA’s agent reference number (ARN), not the client’s user ID.
HMRC MTD VAT login security: avoiding phishing
HMRC is one of the most phished UK domains. The official sign-in URL is gov.uk/sign-in-vat-account. Anything else is at best a third-party tool, at worst a phishing site trying to capture your Government Gateway credentials.
Three rules to stay safe:
- Always check the URL bar shows gov.uk before signing in. Lookalike domains often appear (govuk-vat.com, hmrc-login.co.uk, gov-uk-vat-account.com). HMRC will never ask you to sign in via any domain other than gov.uk.
- Never sign in via a link in an email. Open a fresh browser tab, type gov.uk into the address bar, and navigate from there.
- Use two-factor authentication. 2FA via text or authenticator app is offered for Government Gateway accounts. Turn it on under “Security and details”.
If you’ve signed in to a phishing site, change your Government Gateway password immediately and report the attempt to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk.
HMRC VAT MTD login: easy MTD VAT bridging tools
If you keep records in a spreadsheet and only need to submit the nine boxes, Easy MTD VAT and similar bridging products show up in search results. These tools bridge the gap between your spreadsheet and the HMRC API. The flow:
- Create an account on the bridging tool’s website using your business email and a separate password (not your Government Gateway).
- Authorise the tool to talk to HMRC. The tool redirects to gov.uk for the standard authorisation handshake.
- From then on, upload your VAT-period spreadsheet to the tool, which submits to the API.

Quick answers on MTD VAT login
Where do I sign in for MTD VAT?
The official URL is gov.uk/sign-in-vat-account. Use your Government Gateway user ID (12 digits) and password.
Why does my login show “no obligations”?
You haven’t signed up for Making Tax Digital at HMRC’s end. Sign up at gov.uk/sign-up-mtd-vat, then re-test the connection.
Can I use my existing HMRC online services account?
Yes – the same Government Gateway credentials work for legacy services and MTD. Make sure VAT is added as a tax service under “Manage account”.
What’s the difference between Government Gateway login and Agent Services Account login?
Government Gateway is the standard HMRC login for individuals and businesses filing for themselves. The Agent Services Account is the separate login agents use to file on behalf of clients. Each agent firm has one ASA covering all clients.
Has the gov.uk MTD VAT login URL changed?
Yes. The legacy URL gov.uk/log-in-vat now redirects to gov.uk/sign-in-vat-account. The old URL still works for now, but bookmark the new one.
